Modern cat-eye sunglasses for women: soft lift without a heavy frame

All stories6 min readBy BAPORSSA Editorial
Choose modern cat-eye sunglasses for women with soft lift, lighter frames, face-shape balance, makeup-friendly lens colours and clean daily styling.

Quick recommendation: modern cat-eye sunglasses add a soft lift at the outer corner without looking heavy, sharp or costume-like. Pick the front width first (petite 132 mm or less, regular 133–143 mm, wide 144 mm or more), then decide how much lift you want. For most women, start with Onyx (regular fit, 20 g titanium, polarized), Dune or Noir for a petite face, and Aurelia for a wider one.

Noir in Gold Black: the 126 mm petite acetate front keeps the cat-eye lift neat and in proportion (Noir lenses are not polarized).

Numbers come from each frame's size chart. Lens size is the width × height of one lens; front width is the whole frame front. Every lens is nylon with UV400 protection.

What makes cat-eye sunglasses modern?

Modern cat-eyes are softer than sharp vintage frames: the lift is still there, but the line is cleaner and lighter, with subtle angles that follow the cheekbones and brow. The lens does most of the work. Ours are 52–66 mm wide but only 33–43 mm tall, and that wide, shallow shape is what gives a cat-eye its horizontal lift.

Thin metal and titanium fronts keep it light: Onyx (20 g), Volt and Edge (24 g) and Aurelia (25.8 g). Acetate gives a fuller, more classic line and weighs more, from 30 g (Dune) to 39 g (Coco).

How to choose a cat-eye by face width

The front width matters more than the shape. A cat-eye wider than your face sticks out past the temples; one that is too narrow pinches and makes the cheeks look wider. Check the front width of a pair that already fits you, then match it.

  • Petite face (front 132 mm or less): Coco (123 mm), Edge (124 mm), Noir (126 mm) or Dune (129 mm). Edge is the lightest of them at 24 g.
  • Regular face (133–143 mm): Onyx (133 mm) is our only regular-fit cat-eye. If you sit at the top of the regular range, Lyra and Volt at 145 mm are the next size up.
  • Wide face (144 mm or more): Lyra and Volt (145 mm), Aurelia and Muse (148 mm). Muse is our only rimless cat-eye, but at 148 mm it will overhang a small face.

Nose pads matter too. Aurelia, Edge, Lyra, Muse, Onyx and Volt have adjustable pads, so you can raise or lower the frame on your nose. Coco, Dune and Noir have integrated acetate pads, so check the bridge fit when they arrive.

Soft cat-eye vs sharp vintage cat-eye

Style Best for Watch out for
Soft modern cat-eye Daily lift, makeup-friendly looks Needs good bridge fit
Sharp vintage cat-eye Statement outfits and retro styling Can feel harsh or narrow on some faces
Rimless cat-eye Lift without heavy frame weight Lens shape still needs balance

How much lift you want decides the rest. Our nine frames group like this:

  • Soft, everyday lift: Onyx and Aurelia (thin titanium and slim metal lines), Dune and Coco (sculpted and soft acetate). The outer corner lifts without a hard point.
  • Classic acetate cat-eye: Noir and Lyra. More frame line than the soft group, less edge than the sharp one.
  • Sharp, graphic lift: Edge (a sharp metal cat-eye), Volt (flat top and double bridge) and Muse (a rimless lifted shape with chain temples and the most wrap of our cat-eyes). Choose these when the sunglasses are the statement.
Dune, Lyra, Noir and Muse: soft to sharp lift, from sculpted acetate to Muse's rimless wing, all on lenses 43 mm tall or less.
Dune, Lyra, Noir and Muse: soft to sharp lift, from sculpted acetate to Muse's rimless wing, all on lenses 43 mm tall or less.

New to cat-eyes? Start soft, then go sharper once you know your front width.

Polarized or not, and how dark the lens is

Six of our cat-eyes are polarized in every colour: Aurelia, Coco, Dune, Muse, Onyx and Volt. Lyra is polarized in Black only; Edge and Noir are not polarized. Polarized lenses cut reflected glare from water, roads and car bonnets, while a non-polarized lens avoids the dark patches some phone and car screens show through polarized lenses.

The lens category tells you how dark the tint is. Category 2 (Dune, Muse, Noir) is a medium tint for everyday and mixed light that keeps your eyes a little more visible. Category 3 (Aurelia, Coco, Edge, Lyra, Onyx, Volt) is the usual choice for bright sun and beach days.

If you wear makeup, gradient and softer tints hide the eyes less than flat dark lenses. Muse comes in Gradient Plum and Lyra in Gradient Peach (Lyra is polarized in Black only, so the peach gradient is not polarized). FAQ

Are cat-eye sunglasses still in style?

Yes. Modern cat-eyes are softer and cleaner than sharp vintage versions, which makes them easier for daily wear.

Do cat-eye sunglasses suit round faces?

Yes, if the lift is soft and the lenses are not too small: Onyx (59 × 38 mm lenses) suits a regular round face, Lyra or Volt (65 mm wide lenses) a wide one. Coco's 52 × 33 mm lenses are our smallest, so keep it for a round face that is also petite.

What are the lightest cat-eye sunglasses?

Onyx, at 20 g in beta-titanium. Our acetate cat-eyes run from 30 to 39 g.

Final recommendation

Choose the front width first, then a soft lift for everyday wear; save the sharp shapes for days when the sunglasses are the statement.
